Museum tours can be scheduled for groups of all ages and interests, including students, senior citizens and church groups. The exhibits in the Lawhon History Gallery concern objects and their history as they relate to Hartsville and surrounding areas.  Hands-on tours are offered for children focusing on Native Americans, Cotton and the Early 20th Century Kitchen. General and special tours are scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance and limited to 25 persons per tour.

 

Cotton, Field to Fabric is a permanent exhibit that tells the story  of cotton in Hartsville and surrounding areas and is a tour in itself! The spinning wheel handcrafted  c. 1850, is often called a “walking wheel” because of the many steps it took to spin enough yarn for a simple garment.

The Eastern Carolina Silver collection displays several different designs used in 1907 when the company opened.

The Dining Room exhibit lends itself  well to small groups and clubs of 25 people or less that need a meeting place and want to serve  refreshments

Stained Glass Skylight

The Hartsville Museum is housed in a 1930’s U. S. Postal building. One of the distinguishing architectural characteristics is a skylight. Originally clear glass, each new panel is designed with objects that help tell the story of the history of Hartsville and the state. Gifts from Benefactors made the completion of all 10 panels possible in 2002.

The Hartsville Museum has two fundamental purposes:

1. To discover, collect, preserve, interpret and exhibit the history of the city of Hartsville and surrounding areas as it directly affects the City and its peoples;

2. To exist for the public good in the areas of education, arts programming, exhibit preparation and facilities.
